Emmaus Road

“While they were walking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them.” Luke 24:15

The walk to Emmaus is a well-known story from the time between Jesus’ resurrection and his ascension when Jesus appeared to his disciples, taught, commissioned, and left.  What I love about this story is that they don’t recognize Jesus until well after their walk when Jesus gives them food, an act the disciples saw Jesus do numerous times throughout his ministry.  It is after Jesus breaks the bread that the disciples realize that Jesus had been with them for the entire hot, tiring, and mundane walk from Jerusalem.  Luke says their hearts burned within them while Jesus spoke on the walk, but it took awhile for them to truly see Jesus with them in the mundane.

For centuries, people of faith have used physical spiritual disciplines to deepen their faith lives.  Each year people thousands of people walk labyrinths, make pilgrimages, or wake up early.  These disciplines help people to recognize and listen to God.  This summer we will be introducing a running/walking group, called Emmaus Road, which will meet twice a week on Tuesdays (5:30pm at Good Shepherd) and Thursdays (6am at Immanuel). While using the repetitive motion of walking and running to help us get out of our heads, we will spend each week focusing on something new.  It will be a two-mile loop for runners and a one-mile loop for walkers, and everyone will go at their own pace and do some journaling at the end.  The first few weeks will be focused on our obstacles with ourselves, others, and God, and later in the summer we will focus on a different aspect of faith.

You decide which time(s) work for you, and how often you wish to participate.  You may find that you are like the disciples on the road to Emmaus and don’t notice Jesus with you during these times until later, or you may see Jesus at every turn.  But, as Christians, we know that Jesus is with us at every step, regardless of our recognition of his presence.
